My cat developed hepatic lipidosis from a flea collar? Anyone ever have this happen too?

I bought my cat a flea collar. Immediately I noticed it had a very chemical smell. I have bought other brands before and they have smelled like baby powder or had no scent. After two weeks I could not stand the smell anymore and took the collar off. Shortly after putting the collar on I noticed my cat had started eating less and eventually stopped eating. I brought him in to the vet and found out he had heaptic lipidosis. When I explained to the vet that his health problems coincided with putting the flea collar on she said he had a toxic reaction to it (almost fatal). I checked the box and there was no warning of serious side effects such as this. Wondering if anyone has had this happen? Thinking of sending the company my $2000 vet bill!
